New Iceland Heritage Museum - Gimli - 642-4001
A twelve-year period of Icelandic self-government in an area once known as New Iceland is a unique chapter in Canada’s history. A 10 minute film and dynamic dioramas tell the story of how the Icelandic settlers overcame numerous hardships and successfully settled in the Canadian wilderness. In the Stephan J. Stephanson Gallery you will find travelling exhibits that focus on both historical and contemporary topics. Visit our yellow Viking room where you can try on a Viking helmet while the kids learn to write their names in Norse Runes. Browse through our gift shop or or go down the hall to sample a few Icelandic treats at Amma's. Then take a stroll through Gimli to discover more of the sights, sounds and culinary delights of New Iceland! While in the harbour area of this pristine resort town, visit the Lake Winnipeg Visitor Centre and learn about some of the mysteries of Canada's sixth great lake, Lake Winnipeg. At the Visitor Centre you will also find a 1940’s whitefish boat, a 500 gallon fish aquarium and a mini-diorama that depicts the history of ice fishing on the lake!
