Posted December 13, 2024 | Author Breanne Sewards

This winter, escape the chill and immerse yourself in a world of discovery at the Manitoba Museum.

From exploring the rich history of the Prairies in the Main Gallery to sparking curiosity in the hands-on Science Gallery and marvelling at the stars in the Planetarium, the Manitoba Museum is the must-do indoor activity for families this winter in Winnipeg. Here's how to make the most of your visit!

1. Main Gallery

For any Manitoban, a visit to the Main Gallery at the Manitoba Museum likely surfaces a host of childhood memories: from the triumphant bison hunt to the wonder of the Nonsuch. But on your return visit this winter, expect more than nostalgia as the museum has been busy making updates and bringing in new exhibits over the past few years.

Explore the Earth History Gallery, where fossils and displays bring Manitoba’s prehistoric past to life including the giant trilobite which holds the world record as the largest known complete specimen. Step into the Arctic and Subarctic Gallery to learn about the traditions and resilience of Indigenous cultures in northern Manitoba. The Prairies Gallery highlights the grasslands’ unique ecosystems and their connection to human history, while the Winnipeg Gallery takes you back to a vibrant 1920s cityscape with the most immersive details. Don’t miss the new cougar exhibit in the Parklands Gallery, featuring a taxidermy cougar, its skeleton and a fascinating story based on a decade of tracking data from the University of Alberta.

And how could we leave out the Nonsuch Gallery? Home to the iconic full-size replica of the 17th-century ship that helped establish the Hudson’s Bay Company, this gallery will transport you to a bustling 1668 harbour. Step aboard the Nonsuch to explore its meticulously crafted decks and learn about the ship’s historic voyages.

2. Science Gallery

The Science Gallery at the Manitoba Museum is a fun and interactive exploration into science and technology. The space transforms learning into play, with engaging exhibits that encourage experimentation and may even inspire or spark a love for science in your child! Highlights include the Lake Winnipeg: Shared Solutions exhibit, where you can tackle environmental challenges in a simulation game and the Brickyard, where you can unleash your creativity with LEGO bricks. Plus, don't miss the beloved Matrix Mirror Room which creates a dazzling optical illusion that captivates children and adults alike.

Whether solving puzzles, building creations, or marveling at endless reflections, the Science Gallery is a must for the curious mind!

3. Planetarium

Head to the Planetarium at the Manitoba Museum and get ready to take an immersive journey through space and time. With its advanced projection technology, the Planetarium creates 360-degree visuals, transporting you into the wonders of the cosmos with a variety of shows.

The Longest Night: A Winter’s Tale:
