Things to do During Black History Month in Manitoba
February is Black History Month in Canada, a time to celebrate the achievements and contributions of Black Canadians and their communities.

Noir et fier (Black and Proud) Exhibit
February 1 to 28, 2025
A celebration of Black Francophone culture in Manitoba and around the world, Noir et fier marks its fourth year with the theme Words on Wounds (Mots sur maux). From February 1 to 28, head to the lobby of the Théâtre Cercle Molière in St. Boniface to visit the Words on Wounds exhibit featuring works by Wilgis Agossa. The exhibit takes the viewer on a journey of research and recognition of wounds, barriers and personal and societal prejudices. Entrance is free. Learn more about the exhibit and the schedule here.

Threads of Kin and Belonging Exhibit / Threads Fashion Show

Opening February 8, the exhibit Threads of Kin and Belonging: A Trinnipeg Live Mixtape Project can be found at WAG-Qaumajuq. Curated by Nestor Wynrush and Julia Lafreniere, the project is about collaborative conversation between Indigenous Nations and Black communities on Treaty 1 Territory.
The second annual Threads event will be held on February 9 at the Winnipeg Art Gallery/Qaumajuq, where the Main Hall will be transformed into a space celebrating Black fashion, music and culture. Expect a fashion show, a dance party, talks by designers, delicious food and much more.

On February 27, Gala Noir et Fier will be held at the museum. A celebration of the rich and vibrant heritage of Black communities, there will be a performance by Lydol, a slam artist of Cameroonian origin, accompanied by the Dr Henry Band.

In partnership with Black History Manitoba, the theme brings to mind moments in life that fostered a love of culture and heritage. 10 storytellers will be chosen from a hat and each given five minutes to share a true story.

Shop a Market
Held on February 16 from 2 pm to 6 pm, Kilter Brewing in Winnipeg’s St. Boniface will host a Black Artisan Market featuring art prints, jewellery, tote bags and more, all from local Black makers.
On February 8 and 9 in the Bonnie & John Buhler Hall of CMHR, visit the Black and Proud Market featuring work from over 40 local Black artisans. Entrance is free and you can check out the list of participating artisans here.
Collège Jeanne-Sauvé and Collège Beliveau are partnering to host the first ever Black History Month Night Market on February 27. Head here to purchase art, home decor, jewellery, snacks and much more, all in promotion of Black History Month. Doors open at 7 pm and entrance is free.
On March 1, the Wyndham Garden Hotel in Winnipeg will be the location of Mumzies Craft and Bake Sale in honour of Black History Month. Expect an assortment of goodies on offer as well as live performances.
